A beautifully toned obol of Eukratides I

BAKTRIA, Greco-Baktrian Kingdom. Eukratides I, circa 170-145 BC. Obol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.66 g, 12 h), Baktra or an uncertain mint in the Paropamisadai or Gandhara, circa 170-162. Diademed and draped bust of Eukratides I to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔ[ΟΥ] Caps of the Dioskouroi, each with palm frond; below, monogram. Bopearachchi 3F. HGC 12, 138. Beautifully toned. Minor edge chip, otherwise, good very fine.

This coin is part of Eukratides' first issue, with a youthful diademed portrait of particularly fine style and the plain title 'King'. In later years, Eukratides would commemorate his outstanding military successes by wearing a horned Macedonian helmet and calling himself 'Great King' on his coins.
